At the beginning it was the "Montone" then it became the "Sun". Thus was born "Sole al Pantheon", one of the oldest hotels in the world. As old as the famous square of Rome on which the hotel overlooks, Piazza della Rotonda. A tradition of hospitality that is lost in history, already documented in 1467 when the hotel was "only" the Locanda del Montone, and since then told and handed down by the most prestigious travelers of all time.
It is said that the first illustrious guest was Emperor Frederick III together with the soldiers in his retinue. Then, as attested by the marble signs on the façade, the hotel has gone down in history for having had distinguished visitors, from Ludovico Ariosto, who lived there in the early sixteenth century after arriving in Rome to honor Pope Leo X, to the mysterious alchemist Cagliostro who stayed there in 1768. And it was here that Mascagni stayed for the triumphant premiere of the Cavalleria Rusticana, held on May 17 in 1890 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. Jean Paul Sartre, one of the most important intellectuals of the twentieth century, and his beloved wife Simone de Beauvoir also elected the Antico Albergo del Sole to the Pantheon as their Roman home.
Renovated in 2020, the hotel has been able to combine a refined style, contemporary design with the uniqueness of historical details, such as the authentic period ceilings frescoed on the original coffers or the "ram" depicted in the furniture of the commemorative plaques on the façade of the hotel.
Antico Albergo del Sole al Pantheon has kept intact its vocation as an "historic inn" and has added over the time a note of elegance and refinement. Exclusive and intimate, this boutique hotel welcomes its guests in a suggestive setting, celebrating the past in a unique and unbeatable location.
EVIDENCE
As the commemorative plaque placed on the façade of the hotel witness, Ludovico Ariosto stayed at the Antico Albergo del Sole al Pantheon in 1513, leaving an indelible trace of the passage of his poetry.
"Indi col seno e con la falda piena di speme, ma di pioggia molle e brutto, la notte andai sin al Montone a cena." Ariosto Sat. III (come si legge nella targa esposta).
On the hotels’ facade, are also still displayed the commemorative plaques of the most famous hotels’ guests: PIETRO MASCAGNI, LUDOVICO ARIOSTO, SARTRE.
