Christmas in Rome is a magical time of year, and nothing marks the start of the season like the lighting of the city’s grand Christmas tree. For the second year in a row, Rome’s iconic tree will stand tall in Piazza del Popolo, offering a dazzling display of holiday cheer.
On Sunday, December 8th, at 6 pm, the 22-meter-high fir tree, sourced from Como in northern Italy, will be illuminated to commemorate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a public holiday in Italy. This beloved tradition coincides with the switching on of the festive lights along Via del Corso, creating a stunning visual display that brings the heart of Rome to life.
Previously located in Piazza Venezia, the Christmas tree found a new home last year in Piazza del Popolo, one of Rome’s most picturesque squares. This move was due to the ongoing construction for the Metro C subway station. Despite the relocation, the tree remains a cherished centerpiece of the city’s holiday celebrations.
Piazza del Popolo is framed by the twin churches of Santa Maria in Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli, the tree is set against the backdrop of one of Rome’s most historic squares. This square is the perfect starting point to exploring Rome's charming streets during Christmas. Stroll down Via del Corso to admire the holiday lights that stretch along one of Rome’s most famous shopping streets such as Via Condotti and Via del Babuino. This festive walk is the perfect way to immerse yourself in the city’s Christmas charm.
